FREDERICK, Md.--Junior midfielder Jason Anderson tied the school
record with four goals but it was not enough as the Hood College
men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to the
DeSales University Bulldogs Friday afternoon at Thomas Athletic
Field. The Blazers fall to 0-5 on the season while the Bulldogs
even their record at 1-1.
Hood got single tallies from Anderson and Bryan Lentz in the
first half and trailed 4-2 at the break. But the Blazers owned the
third quarter, using a five-goal outburst to take a 7-5 advantage
into the final quarter. Four different players scored for Hood in
the period, while Blake Rust assisted on three of the Blazers'
tallies.
DeSales' Joshua Van Hart and Dan Thomer scored back-to-back
goals within a span of 20 seconds in the opening minutes of the
fourth quarter to knot the score at 7-7. Then Thomer notched his
fourth goal of the day at the 7:40 mark to put the Bulldogs up 8-7.
But with just over two minutes to play in the fourth quarter,
Anderson took the ball coast-to-coast and ripped one past Bulldog
keeper Jarryd Stamatelos for the equalizer.
In the final minute of regulation, Thomer found Matthew
Brancaccio on the left side and he stuck one past Hood's Sam
Hofmann for the go-ahead goal with just 40 seconds remaining.
Hood won the ensuing face-off and after DeSales was whistled for
an unnecessary roughness penalty, the Blazers called timeout with
30 seconds to go. When play resumed, it was Anderson again who had
a chance to score another equalizer but his shot sailed wide.
Sofiane Lazar was there for the ground ball pickup but the Blazers
were unable to get another shot off before time expired.
Anderson tied teammate Chad Baker's single game school record
with four goals to lead the Blazer attack, while Lentz finished
with a pair of goals and Lazar and Will Oconis each added single
scores. Rust finished with three assists, another single-game
school record, while Oconis had two and Alex Tkacz and Jeff
Balinsky were credited with one apiece. Oconis also won 13-of-21
face-offs and picked up eight ground balls for the Blazers.
Hofmann was stellar in the cage, stopping 19 shots in the losing
cause.
Thomer finished with four goals and an assist for the Bulldogs,
while Stamatelos turned away seven shots in the victory.
Hood returns to action Monday when the Blazers travel to
Lexington, Va., to take on the Washington & Lee University
Generals at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
