WINCHESTER, Va.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (0-11) set
a program record for goals in a single game and put forth a valiant
fourth quarter rally but came up just short in a narrow 11-10 loss
to Shenandoah University (5-0) Wednesday evening.
The Hornets netted the first three goals of the game and never
trailed but the Blazers wouldn't go away without a fight. Jesse
Jones had a hand in Hood's two first half scores, assisting on Kris
Miner's tally in the first quarter and then ripping one of his own
to start the second quarter. The Blazers trailed 7-2 at the break.
But Hood owned the second half, rallying from a 9-2
deficit with four straight goals to pull to within 9-6 with
2:11 left in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Dominique Shorter, Alex Tkacz and Sofiane
Lazar all found the back of the net as the Blazers closed to within
10-9 with 8:24 left in regulation. Shenandoah's Ben Page notched an
unassisted score with 6:47 to play to put the hosts up 11-9, but
Miner registered his third goal of the day with 2:32 to go to make
it a one-goal game again.
Will Oconis won the ensuing face-off and the Hornets were
whistled for a :30 holding penalty, giving the Blazers a man-up
opportunity. Oconis and Blake Rust both had looks at the net but
neither was able to convert as Rodney Mattison came up a pair of
clutch saves.
In the final minute, the Blazers were hit with an illegal body
check foul, giving the Hornets the extra-man
chance. Shenandoah turned it over with 11 seconds left, giving
Hood one final chance to score the game-tying goal despite being a
man down. But the Blazers were unable to get another shot off and
the Hornets escaped with the victory.
Miner netted the first hat trick of his Blazer career while
Jason Anderson and Lazar contributed two goals apiece. Sam
Hofmann finished with nine stops for the Blazers.
Hood returns to action Saturday at Lynchburg College.
