FREDERICK, Md.--The University of Mary Washington Eagles
(11-4-3, 4-2-2 CAC) registered a 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference
victory over the Hood College women's soccer team (8-7-1, 2-6 CAC)
Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The setback leaves the Blazers one game shy of advancing to the
CAC tournament. Hood entered today's match tied with Wesley College
for the sixth and final playoff spot. But the Wolverines defeated
the Marymount University Saints, 2-1, this evening to improve to
3-5 in the CAC and clinch the No. 6 in the tournament.
Allison DiPippa got the Eagles on the board in the 11th minute
when her corner kick attempt glanced off the gloves of Hood keeper
Rachelle Buhrman and into the net.
Then in the 34th minute, Amy Olson notched her team-leading 12th
goal of the season off an assist from Sarah Tryon. Chrissy Reardon
also found the back of the net with 2:40 left in the first half to
give the visitors a 3-0 edge at halftime.
Hood was awarded a penalty kick 5:11 into the second half after
an Eagle defender fouled junior Cara Jordan in the box. Hood
selected sophomore Casey Miller to take the shot and she met the
challenge, striking the ball past reserve keeper Grace Rosales and
into the upper right corner of the net. Miller notched her fifth
score of the season and is now 3-for-3 on PKs this fall.
But the Eagles weren't done and tacked on two more goals in the
second half. DiPippa booted another corner kick to the top of the
box for Katelyn Shank who found Tryon for her fourth goal of the
season. Then Katy Generelli headed in her sixth tally of the fall
in the 71st minute.
Buhrman made four saves in 63:28 while Kirsten Cacciola worked
the final 26:32, allowing one goal. Tina Brehm and Rosales each
played one half in the net and combined for three saves for Mary
Washington.
