FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomores Brian Payne and Chris Quamina netted
single tallies for the visiting St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks
(4-8, 2-4 CAC) in a 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
the Hood College men's soccer team (2-9, 0-4 CAC) Tuesday afternoon
in Hood's home finale.
Both teams came into the match hungry for a win to keep their
CAC playoff hopes alive. That drive was manifested in very physical
play, resulting in two red cards, four yellows and 24 other fouls.
Payne notched his third goal of the season after teammate Amir
Reda headed a pass to him just 2:55 into the contest. But just a
few minutes after that score, a Seahawk defender was slapped with a
red card for violent conduct and ejected from the contest, forcing
St. Mary's to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
SMCM had a prime scoring chance in the 38th minute when Quamina
had a penalty kick opportunity. But Quamina drilled his attempt to
Hood netminder William Lane's left but it ricocheted off the
goalpost and back into the field of play.
The Seahawks held a slight 9-8 edge in shots and kept the
Blazers off the scoreboard in the first half. Junior goalkeeper
Paul Spranklin denied both Blazer attempts on net, one by senior
Corey DeMaster and one by sophomore Nick Berry.
Quamina booted his fifth tally of the season to Lane's right and
into the lower corner of the net in the 70th minute to put the
Seahawks up 2-0. That score would stand as the final margin as the
Seahawks secured their second CAC win of the season and remained a
perfect 5-0 against Hood all-time.
Lane turned away eight shots in defeat while Spranklin
registered the shutout and made two saves. St. Mary's held a 25-11
advantage in total shots.
Hood will play its final five regular season games on the road,
beginning with an Oct. 12 date at Juniata College at 4 p.m.
