FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-10, 0-5
CAC) and the York College (Pa.) Spartans (5-5, 3-2 CAC) combined
for 34 goals and 79 total shots but the Spartans emerged
victorious, winning 23-11 Monday afternoon in a Capital Athletic
Conference contest at Thomas Athletic Field.
York held the Blazers scoreless in the first quarter and outshot
the Blazers 19-1. Hood surrendered just three goals in the first
stanza however and netted the first score of the second quarter on
Troy Hubbard's 13th goal of the season. But the Spartans answered
on their next possession on an Adam Cooper goal and went on to
outscore Hood 10-1 the rest of the quarter. York held a 14-2
advantage at halftime.
Hood recorded one of its most productive quarters in program
history out of the break, as the Blazers outscored the Spartans 6-4
in the third period. Hood's six-goal third quarter matched a
program record for scoring, equaling the effort in the fourth
quarter against Catholic University last season (March 18, 2008).
Hubbard, Dominique Shorter and Sofi Lazar all capitalized on three
man-up opportunities in the period.
The Blazers tacked on three more tallies in the final quarter
and finished one goal shy of tying the program record for goals in
a game.
Hubbard paced the Blazer attack with four goals and an assist
while Kris Miner netted a hat trick for the third time in the last
four games. Lazar tallied a pair of goals and Christopher Gallo
scored the first goal of his Blazer career. Nick Spicer assisted on
three Hood scores to bring his season total to five.
Nick O'Brien recorded 13 saves and Hector Montoya won 13
face-offs for the Blazers.
Ryan McNicholas had an impressive effort for the Spartans,
finishing with nine points on a game-high six goals and three
assists.
Hood next travels to Drexel Hill, Pa., to take on Neumann
College Thursday at Msgr. Bonner High School at 7:30 p.m.
