Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Megan Cahill and freshman Morgan Cole both found the back of the cage for the Hood College field hockey team (3-5) in a 2-0 nonconference win over Cedar Crest College (1-8) Sunday on Senior Day.
The Blazers capped a special day in more ways than one with their first home victory of the season. The field hockey team sponsored a fundraising event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month during which the Blazers wore unique pink jerseys, sold t-shirts and accepted donations for the Maryland chapter of The Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Hood also recognized senior defender Amanda Blakeslee and forward Maria Smith for their contributions to the field hockey program prior to the game.
Once things got underway, the Blazers pelted the Falcon cage with shot after shot and finally broke through when Cahill registered her third score of the season off a pass from teammate Chelsea Young. Hood outshot the Falcons, 12-3, in the first stanza.
In the second half, the Blazers owned a decisive edge on offense once again, firing 14 shots to Cedar Crest's five. Cole scored her first collegiate goal in the 47th minute, giving Hood some insurance heading into the latter stages of the contest. Hood's Ying Van Schaik earned her first start in the cage and preserved the shutout by making four saves, including three in the second half.
The Blazers return to Thomas Athletic Field Wednesday hosting Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg State University at 4 p.m. Hood and FSU (3-9, 0-2 CAC) are currently tied for sixth place in the CAC.
