Box Score STEVENSON, Md.--Four different players for the Hood College men's lacrosse team (0-1, 0-1 CAC) contributed goals as the Blazers opened the 2011 season with a 23-4 Capital Athletic Conference setback at No. 2 Stevenson University (4-0, 2-0 CAC) Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter by Hood, senior Kris Miner snapped a string of six straight Mustang scores with his first tally of the season and the 41st of his career off a feed from sophomore Trey Freeman 1:47 into the second quarter. Hood trailed 15-1 at halftime.
Junior Corey Roberts notched the Blazers' second goal in the final minute of the third quarter, marking his 29th score in the blue-and-grey.
Newcomer Ricky Orndorff found the back of the net in the opening minute of the fourth stanza for Hood's third score.
Senior Dominique Shorter finished a Scott Thompson pass less than three minutes later for Hood's fourth and final goal of the afternoon. The goal marked the 59th point of Shorter's Hood career, making him the program's new career scoring leader (41 goals, 18 assists). Shorter surpassed 2008 graduate Jason Anderson's total of 58 points (44 goals, 14 assists), which he amassed during Hood's first four seasons of intercollegiate lacrosse from 2005-08.
Sophomore William Lane earned the start in the net and was credited with eight saves, while classmate John Martin also got into the action and turned away 15 Mustang attempts.
Stevenson's Tyler Reid netted four scores on the day while Jimmy Dailey and Richie Ford pocketed three apiece. Dailey also dished out four assists for the victors.
Hood won 10 face-offs, including six wins by first-year Randolph Clark, and killed off six of Stevenson's 10 extra-man chances on the day.
The Blazers open up their home slate Saturday hosting Randolph College at 1 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
