Box Score DOVER, Del.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (4-4, 1-2 CAC) registered its first-ever Capital Athletic Conference win by defeating Wesley College (4-6, 1-2 CAC), 8-7 in overtime, Saturday.
Senior Kris Miner netted the game-winner 49 seconds into the extra session and sophomore keeper William Lane stopped a season-high 17 attempts in the net to help the Blazers end a string of 31 straight conference setbacks dating back to the 2006-07 season.
In the extra session, Hood's Randolph Clark won his eighth face-off of the afternoon and the Blazers called a timeout to set up the game-winning play. First-year Ricky Orndorff set up Miner for his second goal of the day to clinch the historic victory for Hood.
Wesley scored the first two goals of the game but senior Dominique Shorter notched his first score of the afternoon with 23 seconds left in the quarter to cut the deficit in half. Shorter would then feed Nick Spicer who notched his second goal of the season to knot the game at 2-2 early in the second quarter. Hood and Wesley traded goals the rest of the half and the Blazers used a man-down goal by Miner with 1:39 to play to draw even with the Wolverines heading into intermission.
Scott Brozey regained the lead for Wesley early in the third quarter but Hood responded once again on an unassisted goal by Alex Engler, his third of the spring. Corey Roberts then gave Hood its first lead of the day at the 1:38 mark of the third period with his 11th goal of the year.
Wesley racked up another quick score to start the fourth off the stick of Kevin Reinert to tie things up at 6-6. But Shorter beat keeper Sean Mathews less than a minute later to put Hood back on top, 7-6.
Brozey struck again for Wesley with 5:02 to go in regulation to knot the game up at 7-7. But Lane made two crucial saves between the pipes in the final 2:47, including one on an Eric Crumbock attempt with 37 second left.
Hood had a chance to win it in regulation but Orndorff's shot was denied by Mathews, sending the game into overtime.
Senior James Larrimore chalked up his first career goal in the second period; he also finished the game with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Blazers were outshot, 47-28, on the day but made it count in the clutch and enjoyed a jubilant ride back to Frederick.
Looking to keep their momentum going, the Blazers return home Wednesday to host Salisbury University in a CAC game at 4 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
