Cougars Upend Blazer Men's Lax, 7-6

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md.--The Clark University men's lacrosse team (1-1) used a strong third-quarter and got a late goal from Chris Johnson to turn the tables on the Hood College Blazers (1-2) and earn their first win of the season, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.

The visiting Cougars used a four-goal third quarter to rally from a 4-2 halftime deficit and Johnson netted the game-winning goal, his third tally of the game, with 42 seconds left in regulation to clinch the win.

Ryan Connery got the Cougars on the scoreboard within the first 4:12 off a feed from Jonah Bass. Then 5:38 later, Hood's Corey Roberts was in the right place at the right time standing in front of the cage when Trey Freeman's pass deflected off his stick and past keeper Andrew DeVito to knot things up at 1-1.

Dominique Shorter notched and unassisted score, his second of the season, less than two minutes later to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead after one period.

Neither team found the back of the net for the first 13 minutes of the second quarter. With 1:54 left in the half, Clark's Phil Winslow collected his team-leading fifth assist when he set up Eugene Arsenault in front of the cage to tie the score again at 2-2. But the Blazers responded with two quick scores, one by Roberts and another by Randolph Clark, in the final 30 seconds and went into the break with a 4-2 lead.

Clark outshot Hood, 12-1, in the third quarter and racked up four goals, one apiece by Hakeem Hindi and Connery and a pair by Johnson, to assume a 6-4 advantage.

The Blazers battled back and drew even with the Cougars on goals by Roberts, his third of the game, and Kris Miner, his third of the season. Miner's score, which came off a feed from Freeman, came with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars won the next face-off but Arsenault's shot was blocked by a Blazer defender and scooped up by keeper William Lane. Hood cleared the ball into its offensive zone but Alex Engler's attempt was saved by DeVito. After a successful clear by Clark, Hood's Dan Rocker checked the ball away from Bass and George Mineff corralled the ground ball. On the play, Clark's Johnson was whistled for a 30-second pushing penalty, giving the Blazers an extra-man opportunity.

Shorter's shot on the EMO was turned aside by DeVito and after the Cougars killed the Blazers' penalty and cleared the ball back to the opposite end, Johnson re-entered and ripped the go-ahead goal with 42 ticks left on the clock.

On the ensuing exchange, CU's Matt Fields won his 11th face-off of the day and Clark called a timeout. The Blazers vehemently pressured the Cougar attack but Hood was called for two one-minute penalties with 13 seconds left. The Cougars were denied the EMO however when the officials whistled Winslow for an illegal crosse, also a one-minute penalty, giving the ball back to Hood. But Sam McAdam came up with the big play on defense for Clark, forcing Shorter to lose the handle and time ran out on the Blazers.

Lane played the entire 60 minutes between the pipes and racked up 13 saves while his counterpart DeVito finished with nine.

Hood will look to get back on the winning track Saturday against St. Joseph's (Me.) at 2:30 p.m. in the second game of a lacrosse doubleheader with the Hood women at Thomas Athletic Field.
