Box Score FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College men's soccer team (3-8-2, 0-6 Commonwealth) was defeated by Lebanon Valley College (11-3-1, 4-2 Commonwealth) in conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers a difficult time dealing with high level of possession that the Dutchmen had and once again had issues defending set pieces.
The weather was magnificent at Thomas Athletic Field in a day that felt like one from early September and not the middle of October. Hood was hoping to end its search for its first conference win, however it eluded them once again. The Blazers inability to mark on set pieces was capitalized by the Dutchmen in the form of Stephen Simonian and Kelly Hess. The goals came just over a minute apart in the 9th and 11th minute and were from a corner kick and free kick from the left flank.
Hood held until the second half and came out with ambition in the second half as they tried to get back in the game. Junior Eric Diehl had a good run through the midfield and fired a quality strike that didn't find a corner and was saved soundly by Lebanon Valley goalkeeper James Clements.
Hood was unable to match the quality of possession by Lebanon Valley as it seemed the Dutchmen were playing with an extra man at times. There quick and sharp passes were a handful for the Blazer defense and eventually led to the last goal. Lebanon Valley's leading scorer Cam Alexander headed home a goal, off a nice cross from Kevin Doty. The goal was setup from quality possession play. Hood could not get back into it after the third goal and are still looking for that first conference victory.
Hood sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Deuber made six saves on the game, while his counterpart James Clements made two saves. Clements and Brian Frasca combined to pitch the shutout.
Hood returns to action this Saturday when they travel to Alvernia University for a conference matchup against the Crusaders. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
