Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (6-11) lost both matches of a tri-match to Ursinus College (19-25, 20-25, 22-25) and host Johns Hopkins University (11-25, 14-25, 3-25) Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gym.
In the first match against Ursinus (7-10), the two squads traded points in the early going before the Bears broke a 4-4 tie by outscoring Hood 12-4 to assume a 16-8 advantage. Hood rallied to get back within two, 18-16, on an Ashley Park-Brouse kill, and the Bears called timeout to attempt to halt the Blazers' momentum. Ursinus captured five of the next six points to get to set point and a Blazer serving error clinched the first set for the Bears.
Set number two was another see-saw battle that featured 11 ties, the last of which came at 19-19. Ursinus used a kill by Gina Powers, an ace by Kaitlyn Ott and a block by Kristin Hanratty to go up 22-19. Hood's final three attempts were off the mark and led to three straight points for the Bears, who took a 2-0 edge in the match as a result.
Hood had the upperhand in the third set for the majority of the stanza and enjoyed a seven-point lead at one point following three Bear attack errors and a kill by Keesha Fields which made it 16-9 Hood. Ursinus clawed its way back into it and turned a 19-13 deficit into a 24-21 lead (11-2 run) to earn match point. Gina Powers' serve was off the mark to keep the Blazers in it, but on the next exchange, Mara Berzins put away the match-clinching kill to end the match.
Amy Hagerdon and Park-Brouse both tallied six kills apiece while Fields and Brittany Lethbridge notched three each, Rebecca Rieser had two and Allie Donoghue had one. Morgan Huffer registered a season-high 13 digs and Alyssa Eshleman set 15 of Hood's 21 kills.
In the second match, the Blue Jays (20-2) hit a combined .475 and racked up 46 kills, while limiting the Blazers to just nine kills in the three-set match. Hagerdon had three kills, Eshleman and Park-Brouse had two apiece and Lethbridge and Kathryn Jones netted one each. Kaitlyn Hays notched a team-high five digs and Jones collected six assists.
Hood returns to Commonwealth Conference play Tuesday evening at Elizabethtown College.
