Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-3)
scored a season-high 11 goals but came up just short in its quest
for its first home victory, falling 12-11 to the visiting Albright
College Lions (1-0) Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
Adam
Patterson got the Blazers on the board less than four minutes
into the opening quarter on a superb transition play, ripping home
his first career goal in the blue-and-grey. Albright's Bryan Smith
knotted things up 1:24 later on a man-up situation for the Lions.
Later in the quarter, Joey O'Hara and Randolph Clark
scored six seconds apart to give the Blazers a 3-1 edge. Andy
Poitras finished a feed from Phil Potter to pull the Lions within
one after one period.
Hood reeled off four unanswered scores to start the second
quarter and assume a five-goal advantage, 7-2, midway through the
stanza. Potter had a hand in Albright's next two scores but the
Blazers maintained a 7-4 lead at intermission.
Clark started the second half by taking the opening face-off and
pocketing his second goal of the day to make it 8-4 Hood. After the
Blazers and Lions traded goals on the next two exchanges, Albright
surged to take their first lead of the day by scoring five straight
goals. Potter registered his third score of the day on a Lion EMO
and Jeremy Salmon's first goal of the season gave the Lions their
first lead of the game, 10-9, with 41 seconds left in the third
quarter.
Hood drew even once again after Corey Roberts notched
his sixth goal of the season off a feed from Shane O'Keefe five
minutes into the fourth quarter. Later in the stanza, the Lions put
together two more scores as Smith scored his second and Potter
tallied his fourth to make it 12-10 Albright with 3:38 to play in
regulation.
Albright won the ensuing face-off but Joey McCulloh made two
clutch saves to keep the Blazers in it. The Lions turned the ball
over to Hood with 2:13 left and the Blazers successfully cleared
the ball into their offensive zone. Roberts' bid for his fourth
goal of the day was denied by Jordan DiZenzo in the final minute.
The Lions were unable to clear the ball and Hood regained
possession with 39 seconds left and called timeout.
Ricky
Orndorff was quick to strike out of the stoppage, firing his
third goal of the season to draw the Blazers within one. Albright
won the next face-off but Hood's Mark Filuta forced
Darian Meador to turn the ball over. The Blazers were unable to set
up the game-tying score after turning the ball back over to the
Lions, who ran out the clock to escape with the victory.
McCulloh finished with nine saves on the day while Clark
finished with 12 ground balls and won 10 face-offs. Patterson and
James Weger
forced three Lion turnovers apiece.
Albright, playing in its first game as a varsity program, held
the advantage in ground balls (60-49), shots (33-24) and face-offs
(16-11).
Hood looks to get back on track Saturday against Eastern
University at noon at Thomas Athletic Field.
