Blazers Upended by Mary Washington 12-6

FREDERICK, Md.-- The Hood College men's lacrosse team (3-12, 1-6 CAC) was defeated by Mary Washington (9-4, 4-3 CAC) 12-6 in front of a good crowd at Thomas Athletic Field. The loss kept the Blazers a game back of Marymount and Wesley for the final conference playoff spot.

Hood had six different players score on the day as the offense was very balanced. Senior Corey Roberts tallied his team leading 13th goal in the fourth period. The Blazers finished the game with a flurry of goals as they outscored the Eagles 4-1 in the final stanza. Adam Patterson, Randolph Clark, and Mike Higgs all scored in the fourth period, along with Roberts.

The damage though was already done from the earlier periods as Mary Washington jumped on Hood early and the Blazers were unable to recover. Mary Washington had three players score two goals in route to their fourth confernce victory of the season.

Hood freshman goalkeeper Joey McCulloh had a very good day between the pipes making 20 saves off of 32 shots. He was opposed by Mary Washington's trio of Matt Prin, Kyle Davitt, and Michael Carnahan as they had five saves off 11 shots.

The Eagles domintated the first quarter scoring the only four goals of the period. Luke Dick had a goal and an assist in the stanza. Junior Alex Engler got the Blazers on the board in the second quarter with a nice man up goal set up by Ricky Orndorff. Mary Washington's Sean Dacey answered the goal with a goal of his own that sent Mary Washington into the half with a 7-1 lead.

Hood started the second half with a James Weger goal that brought life to the blue and grey. Mary Washington countered with a Brian Kelly goal and five straight goals overall to basically put the game out of reach.

The two teams split the faceoffs 11 apiece as Randolph Clark won 9/19 attempts while Brandon McCormick went 2/3 in his faceoffs. The Blazers won the groundball battle 42-41, with Weger leading the way with eight.  The Eagles outshot Hood 45-22 and Hood had ten more turnovers with 30 to the Eagles 20.

Hood returns to action this Thursday in a huge conference matchup against Marymount. Marymount enters one game ahead of Hood for the final playoff spot so Hood needs a victory to keep its playoff hopes alive. It will also be senior day with the game set to take place afterwards at 4 p.m.
