Blazers Fall in Overtime at Shenandoah

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - Hood College rallied to take a lead, but Shenandoah tied the game in the final minute of regulation and scored the game winner in the first minute of overtime as the Blazers fell 9-8 in non-conference action.

In overtime, after a Hood turnover, Terrence Mulvey took a pass from Frank Tejera and scored the game-winner 48 seconds into the extra time.

Hood (1-1) trailed 6-3 midway through the third quarter, but rallied with a five-goal run to take the lead. Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) scored unassisted with less than a minute left in the third as the Blazers pulled within two entering the final period. Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md. / Northern) won the opening faceoff in the fourth and found Chris Wilbur (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) free for the score just eight seconds into the quarter. Clark won the next faceoff, as well, and the Blazers maintained possession for a minute before Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) took a feed from Brett Humphreys (Newark, Del. / Sanford) to tie the game at 6-6 with 13:52 to play.

The Hornets were called for unnecessary roughnes at 12:23 and with just nine seconds left in the man up situation, Foster scored with an assist from Villegas to give Hood the lead with 11:31 to play. Shenandoah (3-2) turned the ball over on its next possession and after a timeout, Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) extended the Blazers' lead to 8-6 at the 9:42 mark.

Drew Brooks pulled the Hornets back to within one with a goal two minutes later and Aaron Paul tied the contest up with just 49 seconds left in regulation at 8-8.

During the first half, Shenandoah scored the first two goals of each period and Hood scored the once in each period to trail at the half 4-2.

Clark returned to the lineup and was force on faceoffs, winning 15-of-18. He led all players with 10 ground balls.

Villegas and O'Brien both had two goals and an assist in the contest. Foster scored a pair of goals, and Wilbur and Humphreys chipped in with a goal and assist apiece.

James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) caused five turnovers, just one short of matching the school record.

John Martin (Thornton, Pa. / Garnet Valley) went the distance in goal, making 11 saves in 60:48.

Brooks had a game-high four goals for the Hornets and Tejera dished out three assists.

Ben Judy played the entire game in goal and stopped 11 shots.

Hood converted its only man up opportunity of the game, while Shenandoah went 2-of-3. Shots were almost even between the squad, with the Hornets holding the slight edge, 36-35.

The Blazers are idle before traveling to Marymount (Va.) to wrap up a three-game road trip on March 8.
