Freshmen Lead Offense in 14-4 Win at Bryn Athyn

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - Four different Hood College freshmen scored three goals as the Blazers took down Bryn Athyn 14-4.

Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) led all players and came up one point shy of the school record with six points from three goals and three assists. Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) notched three goals and two assists for five points. Brett Humphreys (Newark, Del. / Sanford) and Nick Druelinger (Joppa, Md. / John Carroll) each had three goals and an assist.

Defensively, Domenic Cetrone (Odenton, Md. / Arundel) had six caused turnovers, just one short of teammate James Weger's (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) school record set earlier this week.

Murphy got the scoring started at the 9:38 mark of the first period off Druelinger's assist. A little over two minutes later, Brandon McCormick (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) scooped a ground ball after a Lion turnover and found Humphreys for a 2-0 lead. Cetrone caused a turnover with 2:28 left in the quarter, and 18 seconds later Villegas had his first goal of the afternoon to give the Blazers a 3-0 advantage.

In the second quarter, Hood maintained possession after an initial shot was saved and Murphy extended the lead to 4-0 with 12:42 left in the half. Two and a half minutes later, Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md. / Northern) scored the first of his two goals with the help of Villegas for a five-goal lead. 

Bryn Athyn finally broke through with a goal from Scott Witmyer to chip the Blazer lead to 4-1 with 8:05 to go in the period. Hood responded with with 3:45 to play when Humphreys scored unassisted after a turnover generated by Dan Jacobs (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough). The Lions trimmed their deficit back to four at the half when Kieran Ragan found the back of the net with an assist from Michael Donnelly.

Druelinger scored the Blazers' first two goals of the third quarter to fuel a 5-0 run. Less than a minute after play resumed, he scored with a man advantage off an assist from Villegas. He scored again with a man advantage with 9:00 to go in the third to make it an 8-2 game. Another penalty by the Lions created an opportunity for Clark's second goal, off a Humphreys assist at 8:08.

A caused turnover by Cetrone enabled Villegas to find Murphy for a 10-2 lead with 6:29 to go in the period. A minute and a half later, Villegas scored off an assist by McCormick for a nine-goal lead.

Terrence Johnson halted the run at 3:23 with a goal for Bryn Athyn, but the Blazers struck quickly. Clark won the face off and got the ball to Murphy, who found Villegas for an 12-3 lead with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter.

Druelinger scored his third man up goal of the game just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, with an assist by Murphy for a 13-3 lead.

Humphreys extended the lead to 11 with a score at 10:58 before the Lions finished the scoring with a goal by Sean Feyler.

Clark had two goals and won 12-of-15 faceoffs to go along with 11 ground balls. McCormick finished with two assists. Cetrone and Weger had six ground balls apiece.

John Martin (Thornton, Pa. / Garnet Valley) had 13 saves and nine ground balls in the opening 53:57. John Hoffman (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) was untested over the next 4:18 and August Schoenfelder (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) made one save in the final 1:45.

The Hood special teams were firing on all cylinders as the team went 5-of-9 with a man advantage and killed all six opportunites for Bryn Athyn.

The Blazers held a 60-46 advantage on ground balls and outshot the Lions 51-34.

Robert Moran made 20 saves and had 19 ground balls for Bryn Athyn.

Hood continues its three game road trip when the Blazers open Commonwealth Conference play at Messiah on March 26.
