Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's lacrosse team closed the game on an 8-3 run to break open a tie game in the third quarter and went on to defeat Rosemont, 13-8.
Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) led all players with four goals and five points in the contest. Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) added three goals and an assist, and had four ground balls. Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) scored twice. Villegas and Rudy Garcia (Jessup, Md. / St. Vincent Palotti) each forced two turnovers. Joey McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) made 11 saves. Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) won 12-of-23 faceoffs and had eight ground balls.
The Blazers led 5-3 at the half, but the Ravens took advantage of a pair of Hood penalties early in the third quarter to tie the game. Justin Regan scored both goals, including the game-tying tally with 11:57 left in the period.
Foster's second goal of the afternoon put the Blazers back in front three minutes later. A penalty by Rosemont allowed Nick Druelinger (Joppa, Md. / John Carroll) to find Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) for a man-up score with 5:36 to play. Just 30 seconds later, Villegas took a feed from Murphy to give Hood an 8-5 advantage.
Murphy opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with the help of Jack Zuckerberg (Silver Spring, Md. / John F. Kennedy) with 13 minutes to play. Rasool Smith cut the deficit to 9-6 for the Ravens, but the Blazers scored the next three goals to put the game out of reach. Foster scored off an assist from Luke Slick (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) with 10 minutes to go. Zuckerberg and McCormick scored within 30 seconds of each with just under nine minutes remaining for a 12-6 lead.
After a man-up goal by Anthony Bottoms and a tally by Dean Grisoff, Foster capped the scoring with a minue-and-a-half to play.
Ralph Ibezim had two goals and an assist to lead Rosemont. Stephen Licata had a goal and two assists for three points. Purnell Summers had nine ground balls and caused five turnovers. Kiefer Paul made stopped 17 shots.
In the first half, Slick and Murphy scored first quarter goals before the Blazers stretched the lead to 4-1 in the second quarter. Villegas scored unassisted and Murphy took a pass from Foster for a three-goal lead with 6:34 to go. Ibezim scored consecutive man-up goals to pull the Ravens with a score, but Foster ripped home a man-up goal of his own to make it 5-3 at the half.
The win improved Hood to 2-1 on the season. Rosemont remains winless at 0-3.
The Blazers host Marymount (Va.) on Wednesday, March 4.
