Hood Topples Aggies, 9-7

Box Score

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Hood College went a perfect 4-for-4 on man up opportunities in a 9-7 win over Delaware Valley.

Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) scored three goals to lead the Blazers, including two with an extra man. Malik Brown (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) had a career-high three points with two goals and an assist. Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) scored twice. Defensively, James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) and Patrick O'Leary (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) had four ground balls apiece, while Weger caused two turnovers. Joey McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) stopped 10 shots in goal.

The Aggies' Chris Coyle accounted for all of the first quarter scoring as Hood trailed 2-0 entering the second period. Just 30 seconds into the quarter, Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) cut the deficit in half and by the time two minutes ticked off the second quarter clock, O'Brien had scored to tie the game. Brown added his first goal with just under 10 minutes to go in the half to give Hood a 3-2 lead at the intermission.

Foster scored on a man advantage and Brown's second goal stretched the lead to 5-2 midway through the third quarter. After Coyle's third tally of the afternoon cut it to 5-3, with less than a minute to go in the period, Brown found Foster for a three-goal advantage.

The two teams combined for seven of the game's 15 goals during a wild fourth quarter. Hood's three-goal lead did not last long, as Delaware Valley scored three times in a span of just over a minute to tie the game. Kratzke and Coyle scored within seven seconds of one another, beginning at 12:34, to cut Hood's lead to 6-5. Bill Long then tied the game at 11:28.

The Blazers regrouped with a three-goal run to take control of the contest. Gio San Fillipo (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) and O'Brien exploited Delaware Valley penalties for a two goal lead. O'Brien added an insurance goal with 3:17 on the clock.

Coyle led all players with four goals in the game. Troy Darpino and Daniel Smith had six ground balls each. Jacob Tomasik made nine saves.

The win improved the Blazers to 4-4 on the year.

Hood is back in action on March 25 at Lebanon Valley.
