O'Brien's Big Day Not Enough at LVC

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College's Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) scored four goals, just one shy of the school record, but Lebanon Valley picked up the 12-9 win in Commonwealth Conference play.

O'Brien also had an assist in the game and did all of his scoring during the first half.

After the Dutchmen scored the first three goals of the afternoon, O'Brien scored with a little over two minutes left in the first quarter for a 3-1 game. Brett Kudlak extended the lead back to three with a goal at 13:49 of the second quarter, but O'Brien had a hand in the next four goals as Blazers took a 5-4 lead with three minutes remaining in the half. O'Brien scored twice, then assisted on the game-tying goal by Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) midway through the period. O'Brien then put Hood ahead, but Klayton Garman's second tally of the day made it 5-5 at the half.

Luke Slick (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) took an assist from Villegas just over a minute into the second half, but three straight Dutchmen goals gave LVC an 8-6 lead thru three quarters of action.

After Lebanon Valley scored twice to start the fourth quarter, Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) scored twice down the stretch and James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) had Hood's final goal of the afternoon.

In addition to his late score, Weger had six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Miguel Caruso (Spotsylvania County, Va. / Chancellor) and Brandon McCormick (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) caused two turnovers apiece. Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) won 13-of-23 face offs and led the Blazers with eight ground balls.

O'Brien's four goals and five points were both career-highs for the sophomore.

Joey McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) stopped seven shots in net, and became just the second player in school history with over 500 saves.

Garman finished with three goals and three assists for six points, and added four ground balls. Matt Aldrige scored three times. Blake Weaver was one of three Dutchmen with five ground balls and caused four turnovers.

Kevin Masterson played the first 56-plus minutes in goal and made five saves. Eric Wilcoxson played the final four minutes in relief.

Hood hosts Widener on March 28.
