Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College used a nearly 37-minute defensive stand to come from behind to defeat Bridgewater College, 6-5, snapping the Eagles' four-game win streak.
James Weger (Shrewsburg, Pa. / Susquehannock) finished one caused turnover short of the Blazers' single game record with six, including one on the game's final play to ice the win.
Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley), Gio San Fillipo (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield), and Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) each had a goal and an assist for two points. Both of San Fillipo's points came during man up situations. Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou), Cody Mai (Hanover, Pa. / South Western), and Nick Druelinger (Joppa, Md. / John Carroll) added one goal apiece. Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) had six ground balls and was 9-of-15 on faceoffs. Joey McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) made nine saves in goal.
Bridgewater jumped ahead 2-0 barely five minutes into the action, but after that, Hood's defense held the Eagles off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter.
Mai put Hood on the board with 3:42 to go in the first period, starting a 5-0 run for the Blazers.
Foster tied the score 2-2 when he found the back of the net with 8:48 left in the half. San Fillipo capitalized on a Bridgewater penalty two minutes later for his first career goal, off an assist from Villegas. With 3:46 on the clock, O'Brien made a pass to Villegas who scored for a 4-2 advantage at halftime.
Druelinger kept the momentum going when he worked throught what seemed like the entire Bridgewater defense to score midway through the third period. The Eagles broke their scoring drought with three minutes left in the third on a goal from Derrick Daniels to make it 5-3 heading into the final period.
Hood needed to hold off a final charge by Bridgwater in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored four minutes into the fourth period to pull them within reach, 5-4. O'Brien took a pass from San Fillipo with three minutes on the clock to score Hood's final goal of the day and a 6-4 lead. Less than a minute later, Chris Vorhees found a wide open Daniels who struck again for the Eagles at 2:10. Bridgewater won the next face off and were able to work for a shot, but McCulloh was up to the task. Hood attempted to run out the clock, but turned the ball over in the final 30 seconds.
The Eagles called timeout to set up a final play, but Weger intercepted a pass with four seconds left to end the threat.
Bridgewater was led by Daniels and Matthew Arndt, who each had two goals. Daniels also grabbed four ground balls. Blake Mann had one goal. Jeff Strickland, Voorhees, Thomas Maher and Daniel Brown had a point each off an assist. Michael Fairley stopped seven shots in goal.
The win improved Hood to 3-2 on the year, while BC dropped to 4-2.
The Blazers look to remain in the win column against Immaculata on March 9.
