Hood Tops Alvernia On Senior Day

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Malik Brown (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) and Nick Druelinger (Joppa, Md. / John Carroll) scored three goals apiece to lead the Blazers to its first Commonwealth Conference win this season over Alvernia, 11-5.

Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) had a game-high seven ground balls and won 11-of-19 faceoffs. James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Patrick O'Leary (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) had four ground balls. Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) added two goals. Joey McCulloh (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) stopped 10 shots in goal.

Hood had a strong start to the first quarter with a six-goal run, holding Alvernia scoreless over the first 15 minutes. Foster opened the scoring with a goal at 12:37 and Druelinger scored off a pass from Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) a minute later to make it 2-1.

Foster scored again with 7:50 on the clock and Brown found the back of the net with five minutes remaining for a 4-0 advantage. Another goal from Druelinger and Brown in the final minute made for a 6-0 lead after the first period.

The Blazers continued the scoring when Gio San Fillipo (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield) had a goal halfway through the second period (7-0). Alvernia got on the scoreboard at 2:38 when Benjamin Manning scored off an assist from Joseph Campagna to make it 7-1 at the half.

The Crusaders opened the third period with a man up goal from Manning off a pass from Matt Saxon, 7-2. Hood regained control with a goal from Cody Mai (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) at 8:42, and Druelinger's third goal of the day at 1:24 fora 9-2 lead heading into the final period.

Alvernia's Colin Rothweiler found the back of the net in the first five minutes of the half, for a 9-3 disadvantage. Hood's Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) and Brown added the final goals for the Blazers, before Alvernia scored twice down the stretch.

Manning led the Crusaders with three goals. Saxon had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Mark Grove added another five ground balls and caused one turnover. Alex Evans won six faceoffs. Mason Etier made seven saves in goal.

Before the game, Hood honored seniors Miguel Caruso (Spotsylvania County, Va. / Chancellor), Brandon McCormick (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor), McCulloh, O'Leary, Luke Slick (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg), and Weger for their contributions to the program.

Jared Bileski (Waterloo, Ontario / Rockway Mennonite Collegiate), Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley), San Fillipo, and Rudy Garcia (Jessup, Md. / St. Vincent Pallotti) each notched three ground balls for Hood. 

Hood looks to remain in the win column against Lycoming on April 15 for a conference game.
