Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Freshman Grayson Zubradt (Elmhurst, Ill. / York Community) scored a Hood College record six goals to lead the Blazers to an 11-4 win over visiting St. Vincent.
Zubradt broke the old record of five goals, held by three different players. He added an assist to tie the single game points record of seven.
While Zubradt led the offense, Weston Bimstefer (Ellicott City, Md. / River Hill) and John Hoffman (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) spearheaded the defensive efforts. Bimstefer had five caused turnovers and five ground balls in the game. Hoffman made 10 saves, grabbed five ground balls and caused a turnover. Eamon Mulligan (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) caused three turnovers.
Zach Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa. / Garden Spot) had a big game on face offs, going 14-of-19 with nine ground balls.
Zubradt and Alexander Elliott (Cornelius, N.C. / West Orange) each had a goal and an assist in the first quarter as the Blazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Defense ruled the second quarter as neither team scored and Hood carried its four-goal advantage into halftime.
Hood's defense did not allow a goal for over 38 minutes until the Bearcats used a man up situation to get on the board when Hunter Sharp scored with 6:30 left in the third. Alex Mueser cut the lead to 4-2 two minutes later.
The Blazers turned to Zubradt, who scored twice in the span of 38 seconds, to regain the momentum. He made it 5-2 with 1:18 remaining in the third quarter, then stretched the lead to four with 40 seconds to go.
Zubradt opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with his third straight goal before Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) scored for an 8-2 lead with 10:25 left. A man up goal by Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) and Zubradt's final two tallies down the stretch put the game away.
Mueser had two goals for St. Vincent. Stephen Docherty ended the day with four caused turnovers. Greg Gonzalez made 10 saves.
Hood held the Bearcats to just seven shots in the first half and outshot St. Vincent 38-19 in the game. The Blazers won the ground ball battle 46-32 and Hood's man down defense killed 3-of-4 opportunities for the Bearcats.
The Blazers, 3-3 in 2016, travel to Neumann on Mar. 16.
