Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College goalie John Hoffman (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) tied for the second most saves in NCAA men's lacrosse this season, but No. 20 Stevenson defeated the Blazers 20-9.
Hoffman stopped a career-high 29 shots in the game and added five ground balls. The NCAA-high this season is 34 saves by Anna Maria's Paul Schwarz against Curry on Feb. 27. Hoffman matched Brett Farrelly of Adrian and Calvin's Tristan Parece for the next best performance.
His 29 stops are the second most in school history to only Joey McCulloh's 34 against the Mustangs last season.
Grayson Zubradt (Elmhurst, Ill. / York Community) led the offense with three goals. Eddie Somerville (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) scored twice and had four ground balls. Jack Zuckerberg (Silver Spring, Md. / John F. Kennedy) and Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) each had a goal and an assist. Jared Bileski (Waterloo, Ontario / Rockway Mennonite Collegiate) and Tucker Palmer (Phoenixville, Pa. / Owen J. Roberts) each had two caused turnovers.
The Mustangs took control early, outscoring the Blazers 6-0 in the first quarter. Hood struck first in the second quarter, as Tai Foster (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou) converted a man-up situation to make it 6-1 with 14 minutes, 47 seconds left in the half. After Zubradt and Zuckerberg traded goals with the Mustangs to keep Hood within arm's reach, Stevenson closed the half with four-straight goals to go ahead 13-3.
Trailing 16-4 heading into the fourth period, the Blazers outscored nationally ranked Stevenson in the final period, 5-4. Somerville scored both of his goals during a 5-1 to close the game over the final nine minutes.
Hood's nine goals in the game were the most for the Blazers in the all-time series between the two schools.
Stephen Banick had five assists and scored once for six points to lead the Mustangs. Kyle D'Onfrio and Kyle Karsian each scored three goals. Pat Candon had two goals and assisted on two others. Dom DeFazio and Taylor Morgan tied for the team-highs with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Garrett Egnaczyk started and made six saves in the first half. Connor Skeen replaced him in the second half and made seven saves in 25 minutes.
Hood travels to Widener on Apr. 2.
