Second Half Dooms Blazers at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Hood College dropped a 9-2 final at Widener in its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener. 

John Hoffman (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) made 15 saves and grabbed four ground balls. Grayson Zubradt (Elmhurst, Ill. / York Community) and Alex Villegas (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) scored goals. Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa. / Ridley) had and assist.

The teams were tied 2-2 at halftime, but the Pride used a five-goal fourth quarter to pull away.

Tim Taylor gave Widener a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes and 22 seconds left in the first quarter, but Villegas answered less than a minute later to tie the game. 

The score held until the Blazers took advantage of a man up opportunity with 3:17 left in the second quarter. O'Brien fed Zubradt, who finished to give Hood a 2-1 lead. With 1:32 to go in the half, a goal by Robbie Johnston tied the game. 

Neither team scored for over 12 minutes to start the second half. The Pride score two late goals in the third quarter to carry a 4-2 lead into the fourth. 

Taylor finished with two goals and an assist for Widener. Tyler Schulte had five ground balls. Shane Cook caused three turnovers. Matt Horton stopped six shots. 

Hood continues MAC Commonwealth play when Lebanon Valley visits Thomas Athletic Field on Apr. 6.
