Women’s basketball stumbles to Williams in Daytona Beach Shootout Finale


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -  The Hood College women's basketball team fell short to Williams College in the final game of the Daytona Beach Shootout Tournament 67-56.

Inside the Box Score
  • Lele Wright (Wilmington, Del./Howard) led the Blazers with 21 points, adding three rebounds and two assists.
  • Marlise Newson (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) had 10 points and finished with three rebounds.
  • Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) ended the afternoon with eight rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. 
How it Happened
  • Williams jumped out in front early, connecting back-to-back 3-pointers from Devin Biesbrock and Ryann Taylor in the first minute of the game. Hood answered with baskets by Wright and Newson, tying the game at 6-6 with 7:29 minutes left in the first period.
  • The Blazers took their first lead of the game, on a Manning driving layup plus a foul shot, to give Hood an 11-8 lead with 4:34 left in the first. 
  • The Ephs scored the final six points of the quarter, including a Maddy Mandyck layup at the buzzer to make  14-11. 
  • William scored the first eight points of the second period, totaling a 14-0 run that started in the first period, for a 22-11 lead with 6:04 in the second. 
  • Philippa Clouse (Olney, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) made a layup with 3:49 left in the second period to pull the Blazers within eight before trailing 33-24 at halftime. .
  • Williams opened the third period on a 6-0 run that was capped off by a Mandyck layup, giving the Ephs their biggest lead of the game 41-24 with 5:50 left.
  • After trailing by 15 at the end of the third period, the Blazers made back-to-back jumpers from Kayla Watkins-Harvey (Largo, Md./Largo) and Newson to cut the lead to 49-38 with 8:48 left but the Ephs would not led Hood any closer.
Analysis
  • Hood went 11-of-12 at the free-throw line for a .917 percentage, the second-best single game mark in program history. 
  • Williams held the field goal percentage advantage 36 percent to the Blazers 30 percent. 
  • The Ephs outrebounded the Blazers 53-39 in the game. 
  • The Williams bench outscored Hood 17-7. 
For the Opponent
  • Mandyck recorded a double-double to lead Williams with 18 points and 15 rebounds. 
  • Arianna Gerig and Mia Holtze both finished in double figure points, Gerig with 19 and Holtze with 12.
Notes
  • Hood falls to 4-8, while Williams improved to 7-4.
