Women’s basketball falters at Alvernia


READING, Pa. - The Hood College women's basketball team struggled defensively throughout its Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth road matchup at Alvernia University, falling 83-56. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) recorded a team-high 13 points, pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
  • Lele Wright (Wilmington, Del./Howard) led Hood with 10 rebounds, while Marlise Newson (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) chipped in with four steals.
How it Happened
  • A six-point spurt by the Blazers pulled Hood within 29-25 with two minutes left in the second period before Alvernia took a 33-27 lead into halftime. . 
  • Jordan Karmonick scored six points during a 10-3 run in the first two minutes of the second half as Alvernia jumped ahead 43-30.
  • Hood answered by hitting its next five field goals, including a Nyla Laniyonu (Lawrenceville, Ga./Arundel (Md.)) 3-pointer to a 13-5 run. The bucket cut the Golden Wolves lead to 48-43 with 4:58 to go in the third.
  • Alvernia scored 16 of the final 19 points of the period to take a commanding 64-46 lead after three.
  • The Golden Wolves' momentum carried into the fourth with a 19-6 and a Kylie Bradford converted a lay-up with 1:30 left in the game, to give Alvernia its biggest lead of the game 83-52.
Analysis
  • The Golden Wolves outrebounded the Blazers 55-46 in the game. 
  • Alvernia had 22 points off Blazer turnovers, Hood only managed to cash in three points off the Golden Wolves' mistakes.
  • Hood held the edge on in second chance points with 16-5.
  • Alvernia held the field goal percentage advantage 42 percent to the Blazers 29 percent. 
For the Opponent
  • Karmonick recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.The junior added seven assists and shot 5-of-6 from behind the arc, while converting 7-of-10 shots from the field.
     
  • Williams finished the afternoon with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.The junior also dished out five assists.
  • Tamia Wessels went 6-for-9 from the field. She finished with 14 points and recorded seven rebounds and five assists.
