FREDERICK, Md. – An 11-goal first quarter for the Hood College men's lacrosse team overwhelmed the visiting Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins, with the Blazers coming back to dock with a 21-11 victory.

How it Happened
The game started off with a bang, as VWU got on the board just 38 seconds into the game to take their first and only lead.
It took a few minutes for Hood's offense to get going, but once it started, it could not be stopped, as McDermott and
Jay Lanigan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) scored within 10 seconds of each other to put the Blazers on top. Just over two minutes later, McDermott would get his second to double their lead.
Regan Tesche (Avondale, Pa./Salesianum School) got a shot past the Marlins' goalie to make it 4-1 in favor of Hood, and with less than five minutes left, the Blazers made sure to let VWU know they were on their turf, scoring a ridiculous seven goals in the final 4:20 of the quarter, including a slick behind-the-back score from
Connor Flok (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) to give themselves an 11-1 lead after just 15 minutes of play.
Goals from
Sawyer Tighe (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), McDermott, and Muldoon in the first five minutes of the second continued to put the contest out of reach, but the Marlins were not going to go out as easily as everyone else may have thought, as five straight goals cut Hood's lead to 14-6 before
Robbie Wiley (York, Pa./Central York) ended their scoring streak 23 seconds before halftime.
VWU continued to look like they might come back out of halftime, converting on quick breakout plays to get past Morris three times in 1:15, making it a 15-9 game.
The Blazers managed to slow the game down for several minutes, taking away the Marlins' momentum and adding some to their own, scoring four times in the final 5:10 of the quarter.
Offense was sparser in the final frame, with goalkeeping stealing the show for both sides until Wiley notched his 100th career point with the period's first goal nearly seven minutes in.
Both teams exchanged tallies within 10 seconds of each other shortly after, and a late goal from VWU cut Hood's margin of victory to a clean 10 with a 21-11 victory.
