FREDERICK, Md. – The women's basketball team opened up their home slate with a match against Eastern Mennonite and battled in a low scoring affair before the Royals pulled away and took the game 49-40 at Woodsboro Bank Arena on Tuesday night.
Inside the Box Score
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, Fla./Long Reach) led the Blazers with 12 points.
Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) grabbed 13 boards with nine points.
Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) scored nine with four assists.
How it Happened
Johnson after a big game against Trinity Washington started the game with three straight buckets to jump out ahead as the hosts. The guard play consisted of quick sprints in the paint and the Blazers stayed ahead in the first.
The Royals dropped a couple of three-balls in the second quarter to cool off Hood and now the Blue & Grey had to battle back. Much of the third quarter was spent on the second chance for both squads.
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, Fla./Long Reach) scored seven in the quarter to combat the long offensive possessions that end with no dice.
Even with the assist-first mindset of the offense, the turnovers cooled down the comeback and EMU pulled away.
"We were better than we showed tonight," said head coach DeRonte Polite. "Saturday we will go out and prove that."
Analysis
The teams combined for 42 turnovers and stayed around 30 percent from the field.
EMU took the edge on second chance points 13-6.
