Women’s basketball side-swiped by Seahawks

FREDERICK, Md. – A slow third quarter put the Hood College women's basketball team in a deficit against St. Mary's College of Maryland it would not be able to recover from, falling 64-51 at home.

Inside the Box Score
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, Fla./Long Reach) led the Blazers with 16 points, shooting 6-11 from the field.

Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) ended the evening with 14 points and seven rebounds, knocking down all seven free throws she earned.

How it Happened
It would be nearly 90 seconds before the first points of the night were scored by the Seahawks, but the Blazers answered by scoring six of the next nine points to take a slim 6-5 advantage. Both teams continued to battle as the period developed, but St. Mary's ended the first 10 minutes on top 16-10.

Hood ended the first quarter with a pair of points from Jah Savoy (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and used that momentum to score the first six points of the second and tie the game. After nearly two minutes of play with no more scoring, the Seahawks hit a jumper that would begin an eight-point run to regain command, and they would retain that advantage at halftime via a 26-18 score.

Although it took more than two minutes for the first basket of the third quarter, a three-pointer from St. Mary's started a quarter that was all Seahawks. The visitors would score 27 total points, one more than their first half total, and put the Blazers in a 53-27 hole by the end of the quarter.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter were relatively even, but a Gordon three-pointer with just under four minutes left sparked a furious comeback attempt as the team continued draining shot after shot. Unfortunately, the deficit was just too much for Hood to overcome, and the 24-point quarter for the home team would come to a close with them still down 64-51.

For the Opponent
Keira Mason led St. Mary's with 14 points.

Olivia Liszt had nine points and eight rebounds on the night.

Analysis
The Blazers shot 50% from the field and 38% from three-point range, while the Seahawks shot 37% overall and 24% from beyond the arc.

St. Mary's turned turnovers into 36 points, while Hood scored just seven points off of turnovers.

The Seahawks' bench outscored the Blazers' 21-13.
