FREDERICK, Md. – The women's basketball team hosted in-state rival McDaniel and were unable to win the scoring battle until the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 62-44 in Woodsboro Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
Shylah Taylor (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led the Blazers with 12 points and went 6-for-7 from the line.
Jaylah Putman (Jacksonville, Fla./Long Reach) was a hawk on defense with five steals.
How it Happened
After a tough game against the Seahawks game two days prior, the theme looked quite the same in the first quarter with the Blazers coughing up the ball 10 times much thanks to the full court press right off of the inbounds. McDaniel scored the first 17 points unanswered before Taylor dropped her first free throw in to spoil the shutout.
The Green Terror mastered using their big body down low as a decoy and dishing the ball through the paint to a cutting back door forward to score down low. If they that didn't work, their talented bigs got to work and controlled the paint. They continued that into the second and sprinkled a few three's to create a 36-12 lead at the half.
Fast forward to fourth quarter, Hood finally warmed up and outscored their opponent by almost double for the second straight game. Cleaning up the turnovers gives the team the opportunity to score and the establishment of rebounds on both ends gives the team a chance to be in the game.
The Blue & Grey posted almost a 50 percent mark from the field and added 10 points via the foul line to create a better presentation in the game's final quarter, something that team could build on heading closer and closer to conference play.
Analysis
The Green Terror totaled 17 assists compared to Hood's five.
McDaniel led for the entirety of the game, taking a 24-point lead into the half.
For the Opponent
Elaina Beckett scores a double-double via 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
Raegan Lenz grabbed seven boards and dished four assists.
