GREENSBURG, Pa. – The women's basketball team shoots over 50 percent in the second half and continued to improve in the turnover battle to take down host Pitt. Greensburg 57-50 on Saturday afternoon.
Inside the Box Score
Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) leads the Blazers with 15 points and shot 6-for-9 from the field.
Maya Byrd-Gross (Onley, Md./Don Bosco) drills a pair of threes and posts a career high 13 points on an efficient night.
How it Happened
The Bobcats responded to an early Hood lead by handing it to their 5-9 scorer and Bielak cashed in on a pair of layups and even sank one beyond the arc to leave the first with the lead 13-12. Byrd-Gross checked in with five minutes to go and laid a pair of shots off the glass to give the Blazers a spark.
A 7-0 run for the hosts to start the second quarter thanks to consecutive scoring possessions created a nine-point lead and the fear that the game could be slipping away. The Blue & Grey remained strong and found
Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) underneath to get the scoring going and only suffer a five-point deficit at half.
The turnover bug was caught by Pitt. Greensburg and in the third quarter Hood's deficit became a six-point lead with 18 points scored in the third. Various scorers including
Nyjah Harris (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), Gordon and
Shylah Taylor (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) created an expanded offense and flipped the game script.
Paint play in the fourth put Hood ahead with Johnson and
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) and the third win of the season was well earned.
Analysis
Hood hit four shots beyond the arc compared to Pitt. Greensburg's two.
The Blazers outscored the Bobcats in the second half 32-20.
