FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's lacrosse team earned the first win of the season with an 8-7 victory as Senior Robbie Wiley (York, Pa./Central York) scored five times against Shenandoah University.

  • Lucas Strand (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) won 9-of-15 faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls.
  • Brandon Hare (Abingdon, Md./The John Carroll) caused two turnovers and picked up one ground ball.

How it Happened
  • The Blazers struck first as Nafziger dodged from X and scored just a minute and five seconds into the first quarter. Following the Hood goal Shenandoah responds with one of their own after a failed clear by the Blazers that resulted in a goal by Dylan Pencek. Heading into the second quarter the score was 1-1
  • The second quarter of play looked similar to the first as it began with a Hood College goal. This time Flok found the back of the net after another dodge from behind the cage. A minute later Shenandoah called a crucial time out and drew up a play for Matt Daniel who tied the game back up at 2. As both teams headed to their respected locker rooms for rewarming the scoreboard read 2-2.
  • The Hornets decided to change the momentum of the game early in the third quarter as Cody Giffis capitalized off a won faceoff to give Shenandoah the lead for the first time all game. The Hornets lead would not last long as Hood went on a three-point scoring spree led by Wiley. The first Blazer goal of the quarter was a result of a silly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty caused by Josh Boonshaft that allowed the Blazers to take advantage of an extra man opportunity where Wiley scored off an assist from Sievert. Following this goal just two minutes later Wiley took another strike, this time off a pass from Gilsdorf.  With two minutes going by on the game clock the Hornets must have thought they had Deja vu as Wiley scored once more off a Gildorf assist to give the Blazers a 5-3 lead. Not to be counted out, the Hornets did manage to eventually regain the lead after a three-goal run of their own. Going into the fourth quarter Shenandoah lead 6-5.
  • Starting out the final quarter of regulation the Shenandoah defensive sent everything and everyone they had to stop Wiley but unfortunately for them, he had other plans and fired another shot past Isabelle to tie the game back up at 6 points. Six minutes later the Hornet's decided to regain the lead after the Shenandoah head coach drew up another successful play that would result in a goal. With thoughts of taking the victory the Hornet's had good shots however great saves were made by Leuba to save the game. With just under a minute remaining in regulation a shot by Gilsdorf slipped past the Shenandoah defense and sent the game into overtime.
  • As the first face-off began to start overtime each team showed great prowess to pull away with a win. However, Leuba would be the deciding factor to send the game into a second overtime as he made two crucial saves to keep the Blazers in the fight for victory.
  • The second overtime faceoff was a scrum for the ground ball as the next possession decided the outcome of the game. After both teams battled back and forth Kyle Hudson (Millersville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) managed to scoop up the ball and successfully clear it for Hood. Wasting no time Wiley takes the first dodge and scores on the doorstep of Shenandoah's defense, ultimately winning the game for the Blazers. After double-overtime Wiley finished with five goals and Hood remained victorious with a score of 8-7.
