YORK, Pa. – A solid first half performance from the Hood College women's basketball team could not be sustained in the second half, with the team falling to rival York College of PA 51-41 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth rescheduled game.
Inside the Box Score
Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) went 6-10 from the field with 13 total points.
Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) scored 11 points and came down with a team-leading seven rebounds.
How it Happened
Neither team scored on their first possession of the game, but the Spartans hit a jump shot 58 seconds in for the first basket of the game. A Johnson layup just a bit later tied the game 2-2, and the Blazers would proceed to go on a 12-5 run the rest of the quarter to jump out to a 14-7 lead after 10 minutes.
Hood would continue building on its momentum by getting the first two buckets of the second quarter and extending its lead to 18-7. York, however, would answer with an 8-0 run to get within three, and after some back-and-forth between the two squads, the Blazers would go into the halftime break with a 23-18 advantage thanks to a Gordon three-pointer with 16 seconds left.
It seemed the momentum had shifted coming out for the second half as the Spartans scored the first seven points of the third quarter to leapfrog Hood for a 25-23 lead, and despite a free throw and layup from Johnson getting the Blazers back ahead by one, York began pulling away. Both squads played a tight game for a majority of the quarter, but after a
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) layup put Hood in front 28-27, the Spartans would finish the final 2:27 on a 6-2 run, putting Hood in a 33-30 deficit entering the fourth quarter.
Gordon got the Blazers within one with a layup eight seconds into the fourth, but they began to run into foul trouble shortly after. A 9-4 run by York, with five of those points coming from the free throw line, gave the Spartans enough momentum to get Hood's deficit to double digits, where it would remain until the buzzer sounded to hand the Blazers the loss.
For the Opponent
Shealyn Ricks led York with 12 points.
Makenna Zimmerman ended the game with 12 rebounds.
Analysis
Both teams shot 32% from field but the Spartans finished 24% from beyond the arc, compared to just 14% for the Blazers.
York outrebounded Hood 40-36.
Notes
The Blazers fall to 3-12 (0-4), while the Spartans improve to 5-10 (3-1).
