FREDERICK, Md.--Senior forward Brent Benner scored a hat trick
and added an assist to lead the visiting Cabrini College Cavaliers
to a 6-2 non-conference victory over the Hood College men's soccer
team Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field. The Cavaliers
improve to 12-6 on the season, while Hood falls to 8-9-1. Cabrini
got on the board quickly as Benner scored the first of his three
goals at the 3:35 mark. In fact, the Cavaliers posted four goals in
the first 13:56 of the game.
The Blazers got on the board with 35 seconds remaining before
halftime when freshman Carlin Rabie scored his first collegiate
goal off an assist from junior Tom Noonan.
Just 1:55 into the second half, the Cavaliers struck again as
Evan Hanauer put one past Hood goalie Shawn Fernholz in the right
corner off a pass from Benner. Cabrini's Dom Rizzo added the
Cavaliers' sixth goal when he tapped in a rebound off a penalty
kick that was originally saved by Fernholz.
Then in the final two minutes of the contest, freshman Josh
Rathod recorded his first goal as a Blazer at the 88:20 mark for
the final margin. Rathod, who had appeared in only six of
Hoodýs previous 17 games this season, is a native of
Frederick and is only 15 years old.
Fernholz stopped four shots in the net for the Blazers while
Colin Hinkelmon made three saves and Steve Mannino turned away one
shot for the visitors.
The Blazers return to action Sunday when they travel to York
College for the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference
tournament. The game between the Blazers and the top-seeded
Spartans is slated for 1 p.m.
