FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore midfielder
Chris Tipton scored a pair of second-half goals to lift the
Marymount University men's soccer team (4-4, 2-1 CAC) to a narrow
2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Hood College
Blazers (3-5, 0-3 CAC) Saturday in front of a raucous,
standing-room only crowd at Thomas Athletic Field.
The contest featured numerous scoring
chances for both teams as the Blazers and Saints combined for 40
shots on the day including 24 on goal. Additionally, both keepers
came up with dazzling saves on each end.
Hood sophomore midfielder Corey DeMaster
came inches away from giving Hood an early 1-0 lead at the 12:48
mark but his shot hit the crossbar. Saint keeper William Brahmstedt
made three saves in a span of less than two minutes as Brandon
Garton, Tom Noonan and Carlin Rabie all had their attempts
denied.
But Hood finally broke through in the
34th minute when Noonan blasted his team-leading fifth goal of the
season to Brahmstedt's left from about 10 yards out.
Marymount was quick to even things up in
the second half when a header by Tipton went off the hands of Hood
keeper Shawn Fernholz and trickled into the net at the 50:52
mark.
Tipton and Fernholz squared off again
less than six minutes later when Marymount was awarded a penalty
kick at the 56:28 mark. Tipton went one-on-one with Fernholz and
decided to pull his shot to Fernholz's right. The sophomore keeper
anticipated correctly and stuffed Tipton's shot attempt with both
hands, but the ball ricocheted right back to Tipton who knocked in
the rebound for his second score of the day.
Senior forward Marcelino Rabara had a
breakaway chance to knot the score at 2-2 but his shot attempt was
rejected by Brahmstedt at the 73:39 mark. Hood got off three more
shots in the final 15 minutes but was unable to net the
equalizer.
Fernholz finished with seven saves for
Hood while Brahmstedt turned away 14 shots for the Saints.
Hood returns to action Wednesday in
search of its first CAC win of the season hosting the University of
Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
