FREDERICK, Md.--The University of Mary Washington Eagles (7-2,
2-0 CAC) shut out the Hood College men's soccer team (3-6, 0-4
CAC), 4-0, Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at
Thomas Athletic Field.
Mary Washington has shutout the opposition in all seven victories
this season. The Eagles' seven shutouts are also a league high.
The Eagles jumped on top in the first minute of the game when Luke
Hostetter fed a through ball to Vincent Kooijman on the left side
for the score.
Mary Washington missed a prime scoring opportunity in the 33rd
minute when Hood was whistled for a foul resulting in an Eagle
penalty kick. Kooijman was selected to take the kick but he booted
it to the right of Hood keeper Shawn Fernholz who stuffed Kooijman
for the save.
Then, as the final seconds of the half ticked down, Ryan Taibl
blasted a high, arcing shot from about 15 yards out into the upper
left corner of the net as the horn sounded, but the officials waved
off the goal and the one-goal difference stood at the
intermission.
But in the second half, the Eagles struck early once again when
Taibl scored his first of two unassisted tallies at the 47:45
mark.
Later in the stanza, Mary Washington netted a pair of goals just
1:04 apart for the final margin. Darrien Ruggles headed in a
throw-in from Michael Johnson for UMW's third tally, and Taibl
dribbled through two Blazer defenders down the middle and fired a
shot past Fernholz for his second score of the day.
Fernholz made a career-high 15 saves in the losing cause while
Eagle keeper Greg Savage turned away six shots on the day.
Mary Washington outshot Hood 32-8 and took 10 corner kicks on the
afternoon.
Hood looks to end its four-match losing skid Saturday at CAC foe
Gallaudet University at Noon.
