FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College field hockey team (3-4) scored
a goal in each half and junior goaltender Ashley Saylor was steady
all afternoon in the cage as the Blazers won their second straight
one-goal game, defeating the visiting Sweet Briar Vixens (2-5),
2-1, Sunday in a nonconference game at Thomas Athletic Field.
Sophomore Brandy Noel scored her second goal of the season at
the 20:20 mark of the first half off Hood's lone penalty corner of
the contest. Sophomore Jen Graham and senior Christa Lundskow
assisted on the score.
Then in the second half, sophomore Sarah Balukoff tallied the
first goal of her Blazer career when she put one past Laura Wolf in
the 52nd minute to put Hood up 2-0. But the Vixens responded less
than two minutes later when Erika Magee scored to cut the deficit
to 2-1.
The Blazer defense was remarkable and had to withstand an
astounding 16 penalty corners by the Vixens. Sweet Briar also
outshot Hood 17-8 in the contest. Saylor turned away a season-high
nine shots to earn the victory.
Hood hits the road for four straight games beginning Wednesday
at Villa Julie College. The Capital Athletic Conference contest is
slated for 4:30 p.m. from Stevenson, Md.
