NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Freshman Trey Freeman netted a hat trick in
his Blazer debut, but the Hood College men's lacrosse team (0-1)
fell to the Christopher Newport University Captains (1-0), 14-8,
Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.
After the Captains blanked the Blazers in the first quarter,
4-0, Hood matched CNU score-for-score in the second period. Freeman
got the Blazers on the board when he scored an unassisted man-down
goal 1:43 into the second quarter. Corey Roberts found the back of
the net just 2:28 later to cut the deficit in half. Scott Thompson,
Freeman and Dominique Shorter all netted unassisted tallies in the
stanza as Hood trailed 9-5 at halftime.
Hood's Nick Spicer set up Roberts to start the second half
scoring, but CNU reeled off four straight goals to assume a 13-6
advantage early in the fourth quarter. Troy Hubbard scored his
first goal of the season at the 9:51 mark of the fourth quarter to
make it 13-7, and Freeman completed his hat trick three minutes
later to round out the Blazers' scoring.
Hector Montoya won five face-offs for the Blazers while the
freshman goalie tandem of John Martin and Will Lane combined for
four saves in the net.
Christopher Newport's Zach Hill and Kevin Righi registered three
goals apiece. Hood outshot the Captains, 33-29.
The Blazers next travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College Wednesday for a
4 p.m. nonconference game. Hood defeated the Griffins, 12-7, at
home last season for the program's first-ever victory. GMC
overwhelmed Wells College, 21-1, in its season opener.
