GWYNEDD-MERCY, Pa.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (0-2) dropped a close 7-5 nonconference contest to the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins (2-0) Wednesday afternoon.

Hood snagged a 2-1 advantage after the first quarter thanks to back-to-back scores from Corey Roberts. Nick Spicer set up Roberts' first tally, which knotted the game at 1-1 with 6:48 left in the period, and Alex Engler collected his first assist on Roberts' second score with nine ticks left on the clock.

The Griffins regained the lead within the first 6:11 of the second quarter, but Dom Shorter helped the Blazers draw even once again with an unassisted goal midway through the period. GMC registered a man-down tally with 1:45 left before halftime and led 4-3 at the break.

Gwynedd-Mercy's Roy Bakeoven recorded the lone goal of the third period on an extra-man opportunity with less than three minutes left in the stanza. Then Bakeoven set up Mason Risner 3:11 into the fourth quarter to put the Griffins up 6-3.

Captains Kris Miner and Sofi Lazar notched consecutive scores 4:26 apart as Hood closed to within 6-5 with a little more than three minutes to play in regulation. But the Griffins countered when Craig Trueblood found the back of the net with 2:08 to play off a feed from Nicholas Coan.

Gwynedd-Mercy won the ensuing face-off after the score but after a Griffin turnover, the Blazers had a number of scoring chance in the final minute. Lazar had a pair of attempts; one was blocked and one sailed wide of the net. Scott Thompson's lone shot of the day was off the mark and Miner's shot with nine seconds left was saved by Richard Zagari.

Will Lane started in goal and made a career-best 16 saves while playing all 60 minutes. Hood outshot the Griffins, 38-37, and won six face-offs on the day.

The Blazers entertain the Shenandoah University Hornets in their first game on the new turf Saturday at 2 p.m.
