FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Dom Shorter and sophomore Corey Roberts
each netted a hat trick to power the Hood College men's lacrosse
team (1-2) to a 12-6 nonconference victory over the visiting
Shenandoah University Hornets (0-1) Saturday afternoon at Thomas
Athletic Field.
The Blazers matched the program's single-game scoring record
with 12 goals and set another program record for fewest goals
allowed (6).
Hood made a statement early on, ripping off four unanswered
goals within the first 5:09 of the first quarter. Roberts netted a
pair of scores while Shorter and Sofi Lazar struck for unassisted
tallies in the spurt. SU's Sean Mack got the Hornets on the board
with an unassisted score with less than four minutes to go in the
period, but Shorter countered with his second goal of the quarter
with 1:31 remaining.
Shenandoah got off to a strong start in the second quarter,
netting a pair of man-up goals within the first five minutes, but
Hood's Nick Spicer and Ryan Pretko responded with their first
scores of the season in the final 6:44 to give the Blazers a 7-3
lead at halftime.
The Hornets owned the third quarter, scoring on three of their
six shots in the stanza to trim the deficit to 7-6 heading into the
final period.
But the Blazers thwarted any glimpse of momentum for the
visitors, notching a pair of quick scores by Kris Miner and Spicer
within the first 1:32. Freshman keeper Will Lane stepped up in the
final quarter as well, making six big saves in the net and kept the
Hornets off the scoreboard for the final 15 minutes. Shorter,
Roberts and Trey Freeman pocketed the last three Hood scores for
the final margin.
The Blazers outshot the Hornets 33-24 and won 12 of the 21
face-offs. Hood also posted a solid clear percentage of 80.6
(25-of-31).
Hood continues its five-game homestand Wednesday against Penn
State Abington at 3:30 p.m.
