FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (4-3)
pushed its overall record back above the .500 mark with a 12-3
nonconference victory over the visiting Cazenovia College Wildcats
(0-2) on a soggy Friday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Blazers and Wildcats endured a constant drizzle which
intensified into a steady downpour for a good portion of the game.
Sophomore Mike Gallion got the Blazers on the board when he
scored his first goal of the season and fourth of his Blazer career
3:37 into the first quarter. Classmate Scott Thompson followed with
his seventh score of the year less than two minutes later off a
feed from junior Dominique Shorter. The Wildcats cut the deficit in
half when Cory Tilton notched his first goal of the season at the
5:01 mark, but Shorter found the back of the net with 19 seconds
left in the first quarter as Hood led 3-1 after the first 15
minutes.
Hood owned the next two quarters, outscoring the Wildcats 6-0.
Junior Kris Miner and Thompson scored a pair of goals in the run
while freshman Trey Freeman and senior Sofiane Lazar registered
single tallies. Lazar's goal drew him even with former Blazer Jason
Anderson '08 for first place on Hood's career goal chart. Lazar has
racked up 44 goals in his four seasons in the blue-and-grey.
Senior Blake Rust, Freeman and Shorter all scored over the first
4:08 of the fourth quarter as Hood stretched its lead to 12-1. Pete
Davis and Josh Oliver tacked on tallies in the last five minutes of
the game for the final margin.
Sophomore Calvin Burton recorded the first point of his Blazer
career when he assisted on Freeman's second goal of the game in the
fourth quarter.
Freshman goaltender Will Lane earned his third win of the season
in the net by making nine saves over the first three quarters.
Freshman John Martin and junior Nick O'Brien split the final
quarter between the pipes and turned away two shots apiece.
Sophomore Hector Montoya won 9-of-18 face-offs while junior Dan
Rocker and freshman Adam Patterson were credited with three caused
turnovers apiece.
Hood outshot the Wildcats 35-27 and held a 48-33 edge on ground
balls.
The Blazer men next travel to Randolph College Wednesday for a
5:30 p.m. nonconference matchup.
