FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (6-5, 0-2
CAC) fell to the top-ranked Stevenson University Mustangs (10-0,
2-0 CAC) by a count of 20-4 in a Capital Athletic Conference
contest Wednesday afternoon on a sunsplashed day at Thomas Athletic
Field.
The Blazers made an early statement against the top team in NCAA
Division III by winning the opening face-off and notching the first
score of the game less than a minute in. Dom Shorter ripped his
16th tally of the season to stake the hosts to an early 1-0 lead.
But the advantage was short-lived as the Mustangs scored the next
12 goals of the first half and took a 12-1 lead into the break.
Mike Matteson scored his second goal of the season with 1:27
left in the third quarter to stop a string of 16 unanswered goals
by Stevenson. Shorter scored again with 10:37 to play in the final
stanza and Corey Roberts netted his team-leading 18th score a
man-up opportunity off a feed from Blake Rust at the 4:19 mark of
the fourth quarter.
Will Lane played the entire 60 minutes in the cage and made a
career-high 18 saves while Hector Montoya won six face-offs.
Nine Mustangs contributed at least one goal, led by Trip Latta's
game-high four.
Hood next travels to St. Mary's College (Md.) Saturday for
another CAC tilt at 3 p.m.
