FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (6-9, 0-6
CAC) set a program record for fewest goals allowed against a
Capital Athletic Conference opponent, but was limited on the
offensive end as well, falling 6-4 to Marymount University (4-10,
1-5 CAC) on a rainy and chilly Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic
Field.
The six goals allowed are the fewest given up by a Blazer men's
lacrosse squad in a CAC contest, smashing the previous record of 11
set twice previously. Hood surrendered 11 goals to former CAC
member Catholic University on March 22, 2007 in an 11-8 setback and
to Wesley College on March 21, 2008 in an 11-3 defeat.
Drew Phillips gave the Saints the early 1-0 lead with his
team-best 31st goal of the season at the 11:44 mark of the first
quarter. Hood was whistled for a slashing penalty just as the goal
was scored, giving the Saints a man-up chance on their next
possession. On the ensuing face-off, Joe Rafferty scooped up the
ground ball and fired a quick shot past Hood keeper Will Lane for
his first marker of the season to give the guests a 2-0 lead. After
a Danny Carson tally gave Marymount a 3-0 advantage, Scott Thompson
converted a pass from Alex Engler for his 14th goal of the spring.
The Saints' Alex Curley notched his 10th score of the season with
1:26 left in the period.
Jeff Cook finished a feed from Drew LaFleur for the Saints'
fifth tally of the day at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter. Then
Blazers Thompson and Engler teamed up again in the final minute of
the quarter to cut the deficit to 5-2. But David Huson had the
final say of the half for the Saints when he ripped his sixth goal
of the season with just 11 ticks left on the scoreboard as Hood
trailed 6-2 at the break.
The Blazer defenders kicked it up a few notches in the second
half, holding the Saints scoreless for the final two periods. The
Saints were unable to convert on any of their 20 second-half
attempts, as Lane turned aside eight of them, including several at
point-blank range.
Hood meanwhile tacked on single scores by Dominique Shorter, his
21st, in the third, and Nick Spicer, his seventh, in the fourth.
However, MU's Ross Fernandez denied attempts by Troy Hubbard and
Trey Freeman in the final 1:25 to ice the victory for the
Saints.
The Saints outshot the Blazers, 41-20, and won 12-of-14
face-offs. The Blazers on the other hand won the ground ball
battle, 51-45. Lane finished with 13 saves for Hood while Hubbard
scooped up a team-best eight ground balls on the afternoon.
Hood next travels to Wesley College Thursday for its final CAC
tilt of the season at 7 p.m.
