DOVER, Del.--Despite a season-high four goals from sophomore
Corey Roberts, the Hood College men's lacrosse team (6-10, 0-7 CAC)
fell to the Wesley College Wolverines (3-10, 2-5 CAC), 17-8, in
their Capital Athletic Conference finale Thursday evening.
The game was critical for both teams as the Wolverines and
Blazers were fighting to keep their CAC playoff hopes alive. Wesley
notched the first five goals of the contest before Jeff Balinsky
fed Scott Thompson for Hood's first score of the night at the 6:52
mark of the second quarter. After another tally by the Wolverines,
Roberts pocketed back-to-back scores in the final 26 seconds of the
half off feeds from Dominique Shorter and Adam Patterson. The
Blazers trailed 6-3 at halftime.
Wesley erupted for seven goals in the third quarter to take a
commanding 13-5 lead heading into the final period. But the Blazers
didn't quit, scoring four unanswered goals in a span of a little
more than five minutes to close to within 13-8. Roberts scored a
pair while Trey Freeman and Mike Gallion also found the back of the
net. Troy Hubbard was credited with the assist on Roberts' fourth
goal of the day. Gallion's unassisted score at the 11:42 mark would
be the last for the Blazers as Wesley ended the contest the same
way it started, scoring the final four tallies of the stanza.
Wesley outshot the Blazers, 39-24, and cashed in on four
extra-man opportunities. Will Lane made six saves over the first
three quarters while John Martin played the final period and was
credited with one save. Hector Montoya won 14 face-offs in the
losing cause.
Hood will be idle until Wednesday, April 28 when the Blazers
host Susquehanna University at 4 p.m.
