FREDERICK, Md.--Despite a three-point effort by junior Kris Miner, the Hood College men's lacrosse team (6-11) fell to the
Susquehanna University Crusaders (8-7) in the Blazers' season
finale Wednesday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
Miner scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third while Corey Roberts, Troy Hubbard and Mike Matteson also added single tallies
for the Blazers.
The contest was a seesaw affair for the first three quarters.
After the Crusaders drew first blood in the opening minute of the
game, Hood responded a little more than three minutes later when
Hubbard ripped his eighth goal of the season. Mike Matteson tacked
on his third score of the spring in the final minute to give Hood a
2-1 edge.
Sea Ledwick and Billy Spack scored back-to-back goals to regain
the lead for Susquehanna, but Miner was there for the clutch score
to knot the game at 3-3 with 7:50 left in the first half. Luke
Delavan's 13 goal of the season put the Crusaders back on top and
the guests held that 4-3 advantage heading into the locker
room.
After SU tallied the first two goals of the third quarter, Hood
closed the gap to one for the third time with a pair of goals in
the final 1:30 of the period. Miner fed Roberts for his 24th goal
of the season; then Miner beat the horn with his second goal of the
game to close to margin to 6-5 heading into the final quarter.
But the fourth quarter was all Susquehanna, as the Crusaders
outshot the Blazers 13-3 and scored four times to put the game
away. Four different players scored, while Susquehanna also cashed
in on two man-up chances.
Will Lane made 12 saves for Hood while Hector Montoya won eight
face-offs. Hood won the ground ball battle, 56-50.
Hood broke numerous single season records this spring, including
goals scored (136), assists (82), shots (479) and ground balls
(728).
