FREDERICK, Md.--Despite a strong fourth-quarter rally, the Hood
College men's lacrosse team (6-7, 0-4 CAC) dropped an 18-10 Capital
Athletic Conference decision to the visiting University of Mary
Washington Eagles (5-7, 1-3 CAC) Wednesday on a steamy afternoon at
Thomas Athletic Field.
Hood's 10 goals today are the most Hood has ever scored on Mary
Washington in four meetings and the second-most by a Blazer squad
in a CAC matchup all-time (11 vs. York on March 30, 2009).
UMW's Brian Deal wasted no time getting the Eagles on the board,
scoring two unassisted goals in the first minute of the game. After
a Hood timeout, Scott Thompson ripped his 12th goal of the season
off a feed from Trey Freeman.
The Eagles tacked on three more unanswered scores before Freeman
pocketed his 14th goal of the spring with 5:27 left in the first
quarter.
Then at the 2:13 mark of the first period, Dom Shorter scored
his 19th goal of the season to cut the deficit to 5-3. Shorter's
tally gave him 31 points on the season (19 goals, 12 assists),
breaking Jason Anderson's single-season scoring record of 30 points
(22 goals, 8 assists) set in 2008.
UMW outscored the Blazers 5-1 in the second quarter to take an
11-4 lead at halftime. Alex Engler and Troy Hubbard hooked up for
Hood's only tally of the second period.
The Eagles had the upperhand in the third quarter as well.
Hood's lone marker of the third quarter came off the stick of
Shorter, his team-leading 20th of the season.
After Mary Washington's Johnny Hink and Danny Schein scored
back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart to start the fourth quarter,
Hood reeled off five straight scores to draw to within 17-10.
Engler, Freeman, Corey Roberts, Thompson and Blake Rust all found
the back of the net for Hood over a span of nearly four minutes.
But the Eagles' Travis Short tacked on his second goal of the
season for the final margin with just under five minutes to
play.
Hector Montoya won 12 face-offs while Will Lane started in the
cage and turned aside 14 Eagle attempts.
Brian Meaney finished with a team-high six points on four goals
and two assists for the victors.
Hood next travels to top-ranked Salisbury University Saturday
for a 1 p.m. CAC contest.
