Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--Juniata College (4-1) scored early in the second
half Sunday afternoon to edge past the Hood College men's soccer
team (2-2), 1-0, at Thomas Athletic Field.
After falling to the Eagles last October, 2-0, the Blazers came
out strong in an attempt to exact their revenge by
outshooting the Eagles 8-5 in the first period.
Neither team controlled play in the first half, as fouls continued
to thwart Hood's pressure on the Juniata goalkeeper, senior Joe
Kohler. The Blazers almost caught a break in the 25th minute as
junior Chris Mendez broke away and made Kohler come out of the
box. A miscue by Kohler put the ball in front of junior Doug Raftery, looking
at an open net just outside the 18. Raftery's placement was not
enough as Kohler recovered at the last moment and knocked the ball
away for arguably the biggest save of the game. Kohler tallied four
saves in the first 45 minutes while Blazer goalie, sophomore Will
Lane, saved two as the half ended in a scoreless tie.
Within just minutes of the second period, a Hood foul gave
Juniata senior Noah Bowers a direct kick along the oustide of the
box. His shot was blocked by a Blazer defender. Eagles' junior
midfielder Luke Waddell received the deflection and found the back
of the net with what proved to be the game-winning goal at the
47:53 mark.
The Eagles maintained momentum after the goal and outshot the
Blazers 9-4 in the second period and held the advantage in corner
kicks, 8-0. Hood nearly had a chance to net the equalizer on
another direct kick opportunity in the 57th minute but first-year
Eric Diehl's
attempt hit the post.
Lane finished the game with four saves while Kohler finished with
five stops.
Hood will host No. 20 Salisbury University Wednesday in its
first conference matchup of the season.
