Blazer Men's Lax Knocks Off Centenary, 6-5

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Kris Miner netted a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner, as the Hood College men's lacrosse team (3-2) handed the Centenary College (N.J.) Cyclones (2-1) their first loss of the season by a 6-5 margin Wednesday at Thomas Athletic Field.

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the closing minute of the half, Hood forced a Cyclone turnover and, after a good clear, called a timeout to set up the potential go-ahead score before the quarter expired. Miner proceeded to rip his eighth score of the year past keeper Kyle McVay with 25 ticks left, which marked the 48th goal of his Blazer career. With that tally, Miner surpassed former teammate Sofi Lazar as the program's all-time leader in goals.

In the second quarter, the Blazers used scores from Trey Freeman, his third, and Ricky Orndorff, his fourth, to take their largest lead of the game, 4-1, with 5:24 left in the half. Centenary's Tom Montalvo and Robert Nuzzolese hooked up for the first of three man-up goals with 3:34 to go before halftime as Hood doubled up the Cyclones heading into the break (4-2).

Centenary's Joe Swantkoski pocketed his seventh goal of the year off the opening face-off of the third quarter to pull the Cyclones to within one. Hood outshot the Cyclones, 11-8, in the third period but were unable to get one in the net as McVay came up with seven denials. Centenary added a man-up goal with 1:59 left in the stanza and the two teams headed to the fourth deadlocked at 4-4.

Hood made a statement early as Dan Rocker and Miner scored back-to-back tallies within the first minute of the fourth quarter. Rocker's was his first of the season and came off a face-off win and feed by Randolph Clark.

After Hood was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty with 7:47 left and the Cyclones capitalized once again 40 seconds later, as Nuzzolese finished a Montalvo dish to pull the visitors back to within one.

McVay came up with three more stops in the closing minutes of regulation but the Blazer defense came up big as well, preventing the Cyclones from notching the game-tying score. Doug Brisbane and Trey Freeman both forced the Cyclones to turn the ball over and thwart a potential rally. Centenary's last-second attempt to score from just inside the midfield stripe was blocked and the Blazers escaped with the victory.

Will Lane finished with eight saves between the pipes for Hood while Clark won six face-offs. Brisbane and Rocker forced three turnovers apiece and the Blazers killed six of Centenary's nine man-up chances. McVay turned away 17 Blazer attempts in the losing cause.

Hood next hosts Oswego State University Friday in a nonconference game at 3 p.m.
