Box Score WINCHESTER, Va.--The Hood College men's lacrosse team (1-1) used a strong second half to defeat the Shenandoah University Hornets (0-2), 10-4, for its first win of 2012 Wednesday evening.
Corey Roberts, Alex Engler, Trey Freeman, Scott Thompson and Ricky Orndorff all scored a pair of goals for the Blazers, who outshot the Hornets 46-29 and won 16 of the game's 17 face-offs. Hood also improved to 2-5 all-time against Shenandoah.
Freeman and Thompson notched their first scores of the game in the opening quarter to stake the Blazers to an early lead. Engler netted an unassisted tally in the first minute of the second quarter to make it 3-0 Hood. Bryan Pope got the Hornets on the board at the 9:06 mark of the period but Hood countered 1:22 later when Roberts notched his first goal of the season. SU's David Estoclet had a hand in two late first-half scores for the Hornets in the final 3:48 to pull the hosts within one, 4-3, at halftime.
Orndorff registered a goal and an assist in the third quarter as the Blazers doubled up the Hornets, 6-3, after three quarters. Hood outscored the Hornets 4-1 in the final stanza, including three unanswered goals in a span of 1:33.
Will Lane earned the win in goal after making eight saves in 49:40. Joseph McCulloh saw his first collegiate action between the pipes in the fourth quarter, making one save in 10:20 in net.
Thompson and James Weger each forced four Hornet turnovers while Randolph Clark won 14 face-offs and snared 10 groundballs. Doug Brisbane and Adam Patterson scooped five ground balls apiece in the win.
Hood hits the road again Saturday for a nonconference matchup against Randolph-Macon College at noon.
