Freshmen Spark Comeback, Men's Soccer Ties Albright 3-3 in 2OT.

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Three second half goals helped the Hood College men's soccer team overcome a two-goal deficit and tie the Albright College Lions 3-3 in double overtime in Saturday's Commonwealth Conference action.

The tie brings Hood's conference record to 1-1-1.

Two goals in the first 10 minutes put the Blazers in an early hole, but the team maintained its composure and fought throughout the game. Tyler Waters scored the first goal in the seventh minute, when he corralled a free kick from Austin Marich and his shot found the corner of the net. Less than two minutes later the Hood defense could not clear the ball, and a deflection off a defender made it 2-0.

The Blazers needed a fast start to the second half, as Joseph Benton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) put home a rebound off a shot by Eric Diehl (Gaithersburg, Md. / Damascus) to make it 2-1 in the 48th minute. It was the freshman's first career goal.

Hood struck again to tie the game at two in the 62nd minute off a Christiano Pillari (Toms River. N.J. / Toms River North) free kick. Pillari aimed for the back post and Ian Jenkins (Waldorf, Md. / Bishop McNamara) was there to head the ball in for his first goal of the season.

The tie only lasted about 17 minutes until Steve Bien-Aime's shot found the lower corner for a 3-2 Albright lead.

Some last minute heroics by a pair of freshman saved the game for the Blazers and forced overtime. Diehl had a nice volley attempt but it was saved by Lions keeper Austin Aldinger. Benton had another shot and he was also turned away, but Pillari was there to knot up the score at 3-3 in the 87th minute.

Pillari had his second goal and first assist of the year, notching his first career multi-point game.

Hood could not muster much offense in the extra 20 minutes, and held on with strong goalkeeper play by Ian McDonald (Elkton, Md. / Northeast)

Albright outshot the Blazers 20-16, but the Hood goalie tandem of Ryan Deuber (Timonium, Md. / Dulaney) and McDonald made three saves a piece. Deuber played the first half, and McDonald was in net for the final 65 minutes.

Aldinger made seven saves for the Lions in the 110 minutes.

The Blazers continue their four-game conference roadtrip when they travel to Widener on October 16.
