Penny graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood education in 1953 and went on to complete a masters degree in education from Loyola College. In 1953, Vahsen was president of the Athletic Association, a member of the Mortar Board and a recipient of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Also, in addition to being president of the Athletic Association, she also was a board member. Penny also wrote for “The Blue and Grey” and also served as a copy editor. During her senior year at Hood, she also wrote a departmental honors paper entitled, “The Influence of Family Relationships and Discipline on the Emotional Development of the Young Child.”
